Every projection here depends on a rate you choose: a savings rate, a market return or an inflation rate. Small changes compound. Over 30 years, a lump sum growing at 7% a year ends about 76% larger than the same sum growing at 5%. Try a cautious, a middle and an optimistic rate, and plan around the cautious one.
A balance that grows 6% a year while prices rise 3% a year only gains about 3% in buying power. The retirement calculator shows both numbers for that reason. When you compare an investment with a savings account, compare like with like: both before inflation, or both after.
There is no single right answer. Many planners test a range, such as 4%, 6% and 8% a year for a diversified stock-heavy portfolio before inflation, and lower rates for cash or bonds. Using several rates shows how sensitive your plan is.
Not as a separate field in most tools. To account for a fund’s annual fee, subtract it from your expected return, for example 7% minus a 0.5% fee gives 6.5%.
Only where you enter a tax rate yourself, as in the crypto and freelance tools. Tax treatment depends on the account type, such as a 401(k), ISA or TFSA, and on where you live.
